1980's
Sustained Dominance
The success of the 70s carried directly into the 80s, which saw the team capture another State Championship in 1987 and finish as State Runner-Ups in 1988. This era was characterized by strength at the Regional and District levels, with the team achieving Regional First Place finishes in both 1987 and 1988, alongside three District titles (1987, 1988, 1989). While Conference finishes were less frequent at the top of the podium, the team maintained a national profile through high-level performances in post-season tournaments.
Two Times
The decade produced four more State Champions and witnessed a historic first for the program.
The decade's champions are:
Scott Gonyo (1987 at 102 lbs)
Dan Chrovian (1988 at 112 lbs)
Aaron Danzig (1988 at 125 lbs)
Scott Gonyo (1989 at 117 lbs)
Scott Gonyo’s second championship in 1989 cemented his legacy as the first multiple-time State Champion in Fort Myers High School history, elevating the bar for all future Green Wave wrestlers. His back-to-back titles at different weight classes (102 lbs and 117 lbs) demonstrated a new level of dominance and commitment to the sport.
